A Student’s Perspective: “The Ahlayl Bayt and why we should Love them”

Umer Godil, a student of IFSS grade 6B, was awarded in his class for his essay on the importance of loving the Ahlayl Bayt (Radi’Allahu Anhum).

We are blessed at Islamic Foundation Sunday School to also have Umer’s mother, Sr. Nasreen Godil, teaching with us for many years now. It is no surprise seeing Umer excelling in his studies and Islamic interests knowing Sr. Nasreen is his mother and is constantly providing support, care, and love to him at home.

The picture in this column was taken from the first page of Umer’s essay. We have provided the essay in the pages following so that everyone may be able to appreciate and take from Umer’s efforts.

Masha’Allah Umer! May Allah Subahanahu wa ta’Ala continue to brighten your path, give you guidance, keep you on the Siraatul Mustaqeem (straight path), bless you and your family, and open your and your mother’s heart. Ameen.

“First of all, Prophet Muhammad (saw) loves them because they are from his family. [More reasons to love them:] Prophet (saw) family, Loved by Prophet (saw), A lot of them narrated Hadith, Allah loves them, Consists of the Ahlul Kissa.

There are many reasons to love the Ahlayl bayt, but first I will tell you who they are. Ahlayl bayt or People of the House are the family of the Prophet (saw). Prophet (saw) loves them a lot that is one of the reasons why we should the Ahlayl bayt. Allah also loves them a lot if they are Muslim. There are many Hadith about the Ahlayl bayt. Here are some. There might be some Quranic ayayahs.

نت مني  بمنزله هارون من موسى

إلا أنه لا نبي من بعدي

The Prophet (pbuh) said to Ali:

“O’ Ali!  In relation to me you are of the same rank and distinction as [Prophet] Haroon was to Musa,

But that there is no Prophet after me.

(See Sahih Muslim, Vol. 3, Page 58.  Also Sunan Ibn Maajeh, Vol. 1, Page 28.  Also Al-Mustadrak, Al-Haakim, Vol. 3, Page 109.

Another Hadith about the Ahlayl bayt is this.

I [Muhammad] and Ali are the fathers of this nation.

He who recognizes us as such believes in Allah, the Mighty and Glorious.

And from Ali are my two grandchildren,

Al-Hasan and Al-Husain, each of whom is the Prince over the Youth in Heaven;

and among the descendants of Al-Husain are nine, obedience to them is obedience to me, and disobedience to them is disobedience to me.

The ninth of them is their Qaa’im and Mahdi (the firmly established), the executor, and the Divinely trained for right guidance.  (See Ik’maal Al-Deen, Al-Siddooq quoting Imam Al-Ridha).

Narrated Aisha: One day the Prophet (PBUH&HF) came out afternoon wearing a black cloak (upper garment or gown; long coat), then al-Hasan Ibn Ali came and the Prophet accommodated him under the cloak, then al-Husain came and entered the cloak, then Fatimah came and the Prophet entered her under the cloak, then Ali came and the Prophet entered him to the cloak as well. Then the Prophet recited: “Verily Allah intends to keep off from you every kind of uncleanness O’ People of the House (Ahlul-Bayt), and purify you a perfect purification (the last sentence of Verse 33:33).” Umm Salama said to the Holy Prophet: “Am I also one of them?” He replied: “No. You have your own special position and your future is good.”

I said, “O Prophet of Allah! Am I not also one of your Ahlul-Bayt?” I swear by the Almighty that the Holy Prophet did NOT grant me any distinction and said: “You have a good future.”  Sunni reference: Tafsir al-Tabari, v22, p7 under the commentary of verse 33:33

Those are only some of the amazing and beautiful Hadith about the Ahlayl bayt. The Ahlayl bayt affects us because of the Hadith they narrated. Also we should try to follow their example as well as the Prophet (saw)’s example and sunnah. We should all love them like our own relatives. In fact even more. The Ahlayl bayt risked so much for Islam and Muslims. The were killed, they starved to death and so much more you can’t even imagine. There is no way we can pay them back. The least we can do is love them. Unfortunately people forget all they’ve done for us. If you read some of their stories it will bring tears to some eyes.  We could go for ever talking about them. That is why we should love the Ahlayl bayt”
