The food pyramid that much of our youth grew up with has been modified and turned into a food plate. The new food standard graphic is called “MyPlate.” This was a new initiative started by Michelle Obama, the First Lady, wife of President Obama.
Michelle Obama said, “When it comes to eating, what’s more useful than a plate, what’s more simple than a plate?” She called it, “a quick, simple reminder for all of us to be more mindful of the foods we’re eating.”
This reminder extends to everyone, fasting Muslims in Shahru Ramadan included! The graphic shows the proportions of types of foods we should be eating. It’s important to note that the proportion of vegetables we should be eating is much larger than any other category! Honestly, eating healthy will probably be more difficult than fasting! But we should remember that Rasulullah صلي الله عليه وسلم encouraged a healthy lifetstyle. Staying healthy and eating right will allow us to focus more in our salaat and appreciate the numerous blessings Allah has given us. Although this may seem like a challenge to sacrifice our bakhlawas and samosas, what a better time to make a change for the better than in Ramadan Shareef! May Allah put Baraka in our efforts in becoming healthier stronger Muslims!
