Editor’s Note: The Islamic New Year-Moving Forward
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and marks the beginning of the new Islamic year: Hijri 1434. SubhanAllah! It has been almost a year now that The Monthly Noor has been releasing publications with all of the students’, parents’, and community members’ support. Insha’Allah, we hope to continue publishing, so as a humble request, please keep us in your prayers.
As we begin the new year, we are reminded of new beginnings, change, and moving forward. Many of our brothers and sisters are coming back from Hajj, hearts and souls purified. The world is seen in a different light after one has done Hajj. It is a tremendous way to begin the new year; however, we are also given another very powerful reminder in this first month: the Shahadat of Imam Hussain.
Sayyidinah Imam Hussain رضي الله عنه is the grandson of Rasulullahصلي الله عليه واله وسلم . He is blessed with the image of Rasulullahصلي الله عليه واله وسلم from his chest down to his feet. The Prince of Jannah, Imam Hussain, is a leader of paradise. Rasulullahصلي الله عليه واله وسلم said that Imam Hussain inherited his own traits of courage and generosity and that Imam Hussain was his flower of this world.
Imam Hussain was from the family of Rasulullah صلي الله عليه واله وسلم , had the jamal (beauty) of Rasulullahصلي الله عليه واله وسلم , the Noor of Bibi Fatimah, and the bravery and chivalry of Hadrat Ali. His chivalry, nobility, and benevolence knew no bounds even when his life was threatened. He gave up his home, his wealth, his security, and his family in order to stand up for the truth. He sacrificed his life and became shaheed on the 10th of Muharram.
Tears well up as we remember the injustice done to the Holy Family of Rasulullah صلي الله عليه واله وسلم , as he himself also shed tears for Imam Hussain, but we shouldn’t simply reduce him to tears. We should learn, apply, and live the values Imam Hussain sacrificed his life for. In this way, Imam Hussain achieved victory in his shahadat! We have to love him dearly, remember his sacrifice, hold onto the Qur’an and the rope of the Ahlul Bayt, and keep them dear to our hearts. This way, we can keep moving forward, towards Allah.
