The Sahaba and Their Love for the Ahlul Bayt
The Sahaba, May Allah be pleased with them, are the best of people: of all communities and of all generations. Never again will a time come where such great people exist. We know of their numerous historical feats for Islam and the countless miracles, karamat, that are associated with them. But what was their secret? What made them so perfect in character, manners, religion, family, community, and dawah? They lived by example, loved Allah, held onto the Qur’an, and loved the Ahlul Bayt.
Abu Bakr Siddiq said “By the One in whose hands is my life, the Prophet’s (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم ) relatives are more beloved to me than my own relatives.” (Bukhari)
Hadrat Abu Bakr’s love for Rasulullah (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم ) is well known. Hadrat Abu Bakr was the first Caliph of Islam, the father of Rasulullah’s (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم ) wife, accompanied Rasulullah (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم ) on the Hijra, and was given the title “As-Siddiq” by Allah. He was Rasulullah’s (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم ) best friend and sacrificed his wealth, property, and well-being for the sake of Allah and his Rasul (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم ).
He loved Rasulullah (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم ) so much that he also ordered, “Safeguard Muhammad in his Ahlul Bayt” (Bukhari). As an example of this love for the Ahlul Bayt, ‘Uqba bin Al-Harith is reported to have said, “I saw Abu Bakr carrying Al Hasan and saying, “Let my father be sacrificed for you; you resemble the Prophet and not ‘Ali,” while ‘Ali was laughing at this (Saheeh Bukhari).
Look at the amount of love and respect he had for the children of Hadrat Ali! Saying Imam Hasan looked like Rasulullah (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم ) is an enormous compliment. Not only that, but Hadrat Abu Bakr As-Siddiq and Hadrat Ali were walking side by side each other as friends. They loved each other and respected each other very much even though their stations with Allah are tremendous.
Hadrat Abu Bakr loved the Ahlul Bayt because he knew Rasulullah (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم ) loved them too. Hadrat Umar and the other blessed Sahaba also loved the Ahlul Bayt for the same reason with narrations proving this. Narrated by Ibn Sa’d, Ibn Rahuyah, and al-Khatib, Umar saw al-Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib waiting at this door. He said to him, “You are more deserving of permission to enter than [my own son] AbdAllah ibn Umar! You see the goodness that was placed on our head; [therefore] first Allah, then you [the Ahlul Bayt].”
The Sahaba loved Rasulullah (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم ); therefore, they showed deep respect and love to everything Rasulullah (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم ) liked.
Although he was apart of the first generation after the Sahaba, Imam Shafi’ also expressed his love for the Ahlul Bayt through poetry. Here is one of many verses he wrote for them.
“O Family of the Prophet (ملسو هلاو هيلع ﷲ يلص ) your love is an obligation from Allah in the Quran He sent to us It is sufficient for your great honor and prestige that whoever does not send blessings upon you has no prayer”
The amount of respect and love between the Sahaba and Ahlul Bayt is clear! May Allah raise the status of the Sahaba, bless them, and increase our love for them forever!
