Editor’s Note: The Permission of Allah
The Earth remains in its course everyday, the moon revolving around the Earth, and the sun rising in the East. Snow falls, delicately covering the green grass, pure whiteness in all directions. Our hearts tirelessly beat 80 times a minute, providing life to our entire body.
All of these things, no matter how independent they may seem, are completely dependent on Allah. Nothing occurs without the permission of Allah. The sun rises with His permission; the snow falls with His permission; water quenches our thirst with His permission; every time our heart beats, it takes permission from Allah before doing so!
As such, all good comes from Allah, including the piety that resides within the righteous. The righteous are those people who fear Allah, love his Rasul ﷺ strictly adhere to the shari’a, and who gain nearness to Allah, becoming a Wali. The term, Awliya, is the Arabic plural for wali, which means friend.
In regards to the Majestic Qur’an Kareem, Allah refers to the Awliya as his “friends” or those who are beloved to him. Allah refers to them as “awliya” in Surah Yunus ayah 62, “Behold! verily on the friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve.” This is an exalted rank that is bestowed by Allah upon those who love Him.
The Awliya act as a reminder for all Muslims to stay on the straight path and perfect their deen. Allah says in the Majestic Qur’an, “And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers” (51:55). Whatever a reminder may be, if it brings us closer to Allah, then it will benefit us! As such, when we see, learn about, or sit in the company of the Mutaqeen (those on the straight path) we remember Allah, are reminded of our purpose in life, and are given the energy we need to strengthen our connection to Allah.
That’s why it is so important that we learn about and love those close to Allah. When Allah has given permission to water to quench our thirst, how could he not give permission to the Awliya to bring us closer to Him?
