Student Essay Submission: Following the Righteous
Allah (Subhanah wa taala) has made every human being unique in its own way and has exalted the status of some who have followed the right path by following the rules that the Prophet ﷺ left behind for every Muslim. As Allah Subhanah wa taala states in the Holy Quran in Surah Fatiha: “Keep us to the straight path – the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked Your anger or of those who are astray.” In this verse of the holy Quran, Allah Subhanah wa taala wants us to follow the right path and to follow those who have worked hard to maintain a strong relation with Allah by following His commands such as reading Quran, praying Salat, paying Zakat, observing Fast, performing Hajj, and following the necessary teachings that leads us to the land of paradise.
Now who are the people that Allah is instructing us to follow in the Holy Quran? They are the righteous individuals who have come down to Earth after the Prophet Muhammad (Prayers and Salutations of Allah be upon Him) to spread, follow, and teach the true path of Allah. They are known as the AwliyaAllah in which Allah has praised their status because of the good deeds and acts they have taught in this world pleasing Allah Subhanah wa taala. They are also known as the friends of Allah in which Allah has been pleased with their prayers and acts of good deeds.
Among the scholars that are recognized as the AwliyaAllah, the sultan or the leader of the AwliyaAllah is Shaykh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani(May Allah be pleased with him). Shaykh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani was born on 470 A.H. and at the time of his birth it was said by his mother Syeda Ummul Khair Fatima that he wouldn’t drink milk during the time of day due to the month of Ramadan. Right from birth people came to know about his noble character and the acts of goodness that he would spread in the future.
Since then, he wanted to go to Baghdad (In Iraq) to seek knowledge. So he acquired permission from his mother Syeda Ummul Khair Fatima who accepted his request. Upon leaving Syeda Ummul Khair Fatima gave Shaykh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani forty dinars (dollars) and told him to make a promise never to commit a sin by lying. Shaykh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani gave her the promise that he will never lie and will always be truthful.
From there Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani journeyed to Baghdad on a caravan. Along the way, there were thieves that stopped Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani’s caravan and asked him if he had any goods. Since, Shaykh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani promised his mother for speaking only the truth, he answered them back by telling them that he had forty dinars in his pocket that his mother stitched up for him on his shirt. The thieves thought he was lying so they brought him to their chief. The chief asked the same question and Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani gave him the same answer that he told the thieves. Eventually the leader of the thieves ripped the stitching that had forty dinars and discovered that indeed the child did have forty dinars. The boss then asked him why you made this true confession (of the forty dinars). Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani replied that he made a promise with his mother that he would only speak the truth. Upon hearing this, he realized his mistakes that he had done by stealing, he than repented for his sins along with the other thieves.
After this incident, Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani Radiullahu Anhu continued his journey to Baghdad and became a great scholar of Islam.
Over 70,000 people converted to Islam by his hand. In addition, through his scholarly work, he managed to restore and save the Hanbali Fiqh which was in danger of disappearing.
So may Allah Subhana wa taala give us guidance and add in our hearts the love for Shaykh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radiullahu Anhu) to follow the right path of Allah and to make us true Muslims.
