Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani

Jilani ghombad

Hadrat Shaykh Syed Muhiyyudin Abdul Qadir Jilani is the descendant of our beloved, the Prophet of Allah, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa (ﷺ). Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani was the son of Abu Salih Jangi Dost, a descendant in the direct line of Hadrat Imam al-Hasan- the grandson of Sayyidinah Rasulullah (ﷺ). His mother Syedah Fatimah Ummulkhair, was the descendant of Imam al-Hussain. This way, Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani was the pure descendant of the Prophet (ﷺ).

Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani revived the religion of Islam in which this world got the provision it needed during that time. Imam Yafai, Imam Ibn Jauzi, Imam Sha’raan, Shaykhh Ibn Taymiyya, Shaykh Abdul Haq Muhaddith, Shah Waliullah, and many renowned scholars have commented highly about him, his status, and his scholarship.

Sayyidinah Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani since childhood showed signs of his great character and in the days of his infancy, he refused to drink milk since it was the time of fasting during the month of Ramadan. People in Jilan would ask the mother of Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani if his son drank milk because with that information they were able to know whether the time came for opening the fast.

Even during his childhood, Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani would be found not playing with other children his age, and when he was tempted to do so, a heavenly voice would speak out to him telling him to come out to me and not to play. Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani was shy and quiet and at the age of five. His mother was the sole guardian of him.

At the age of 18, Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani finished his education in Jilan. One day when he was cleaning the farmland using an oxen. While working, the oxen turned around and spoke to Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani saying, “You are not made for this.”
Upon hearing this, Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani was frightened, and he ran back to his house and climbed the roof. He was disturbed by this event. While he was sitting on the roof, he saw a gathering of pilgrims in Arafat and upon witnessing this beautiful scene, Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani had a feeling in his heart and soul that urged him to go out to Baghdad to seek knowledge since during that time, Baghdad was the city for Jurisprudence and spiritual learning.

Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani told his mother about what he saw and asked her if he could travel. His mother agreed to his decision for she did not want Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani to be hindered in his search for spiritual advancement. Upon Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani’s departure, his mother gave him 40 dinars in which she sewed and stitched them in the inner part of his sleeve. She told him to always speak the truth, to be steadfast in the observance of divine commands, and to be far away from the unlawful things. With his mother’s duas, Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani began his journey to the city of Baghdad on a caravan.

During his journey the caravan was stopped by a band of burglars that looted and stole the belongings that were in the caravan. As the members of the band captured Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani, they asked if he had anything valuable. Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani said he had 40 dinars stitched to his inner part of his sleeve. The chief of the robbers told him to show the proof, and therefore the 40 dinars were stripped away from Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani. The chief of the robbers was shocked that he would tell the truth, so he asked him why he spoke the truth (whereas he could have silently walked away without informing them of the money) . Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani replied saying that his mother told him to speak the truth and that he couldn’t lie and disobey his mother. Upon hearing this, the chief of the robbers began crying saying that you cannot disobey your mother; whereas, I have disobeyed my lord many times. The chief along with all the other robbers repented in the hands of Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani, accepted Islam, and returned the stolen belongings to their respected owners.

This gives a very good lesson to the entire world that the truth (Haq) always win in any circumstances. Allah has ordained in Quran to be in the company of truthful!
Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani resumed his journey to the city of Baghdad where he became the greatest scholar of his time. The adab (Proper manner) he practiced with His teachers are marvelous. His honesty, patience, steadfastness, and his love for Allah and the Prophet (ﷺ) cannot be matched. We pray to Allah to give us guidance to follow the traditions of our Prophet (ﷺ). Ameen.
